Definition of Tefillin Tefilin Tfillin Tfilin

What are Tefillin? Tefillin are black leather boxes that contain hand-written paragraphs from Scripture. These paragraphs are hand written by an observant, G-d fearing Jewish scribe using a feather as the pen, and writing with hand-made ink on specially prepared genuine parchment. These leather boxes called tefillin are worn by Jews around the world during morning prayer. The Torah commands us to place 4 paragraphs of tefillin text, hand written by an observant scribe on parchment inside these leather Tefillin boxes and strap these tefilin onto our left arm, and on the head every weekday. Tefillin must be 100% kosher. Tefilin that are only 99% kosher are 100% Possul, meaning 100% NON Kosher! Tefillin are sometimes called Phylacteries, but you will never find anyone who wears them to call them that. The word Tefillin is pronounced Tfillin.

Tefillin Batim
The type of tefillin called Tefillin Gassos, which are shown below, are the strongest and have high levels of "Hiddur" or enhancement and are by far the most durable tefillin.

Some people feel the type of tefillin called Tefillin Dakkos or Dakkos Tefillin are halachacly preferable, however they do not last anywhere as long nor wear as well as Gassos tefillin .

Tefillin vary in price based upon the quality of their tefillin Batim (boxes) and the quality of their tefillin Parashos (parchments inside). The strongest and most expensive tefillin batim are made out of one very thick piece of skin from the neck of a kosher ox. These are called tefillin Gassos (Thick ones). This procedure yields true "Ohr Echad" tefillin batim. This very thick hide is molded with high manual pressure into the perfectly square tefillin batim with all the complicated folds. This method takes many skilled hours of labor and is quite costly to make.

Tefillin Dakkos are also "Ohr Echad" but are made from the thinner skin of a goat. This is awesome for halacha, putting the parashios closer to your skin, etc., but they are far more fragile than the Gassos tefillin above.

Tefillin Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin are not true "Ohr Echad" as they are constructed of a piece of this skin cut in necessary places for easy folding and fastening in place. They are the most fragile of the tefillin batim that I carry and are not as preferable by halacha as Dakkos tefillin and Gassos tefillin. Though we use very high quality Peshutim Mehudarim batim, please note that the BaDaTz does not certify any Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin batim, so their tefillin certification is on the parashios only.

Regular Peshutos tefillin or Peshutim (not "Mehudarim") tefillin are not made out of one piece of skin at all, and are in fact constructed from many small pieces of skin glued together in the shape of tefillin. These bear no resemblances to Ohr Echad tefillin , are the most fragile and the least preferable tefillin by halacha. I refuse to sell these tefillin batim, and will not use tefillin batim from houses that make these batim.

My recommendation: If you can afford them, choose either Dakkos tefillin or Gassos tefillin preferrably tefillin Gassos . Use Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin if you can't afford Dakkos tefillin .
If financially feasible, choose Gassos tefillin for Bar Mitzvah boys. 13-year old boys do not have good control of their grasp when putting on their tefillin, especially when standing around with other boys, etc., are much harder on tefillin (dropping tefillin on hard floors, pulling to hard on tefillin straps) and though Gassos tefillin are more expensive to begin with; they are usually much less expensive tefillin in the long run, and kids tend to ruin the more fragile Dakkos tefillin or Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin .
Dakkos tefillin are held by some to be the best, as the leather at the base is thinner and brings the parashios closer to the skin... , but most prefer Gassos since the thin skin of Dakkos tefillin makes them very fragile and subject to warpage. Both are far better according to halacha than Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin .
If you have a sensitive scalp, and feel uncomfortable with heavy tefillin, Dakkos tefillin are much lighter in weight than tefillin Gassos.
If you are rough on tefillin, pulling the retzuos (straps) very tight, or dropping them or handling them roughly... you MUST choose tefillin Gassos. Constantly pulling shel yad tefillin retzuos tightly WILL warp tefillin Dakkos and tefillin Peshutim Mehudarim batim.
Even for those who feel Dakkos tefillin have a slight edge over Gassos for hiddur mitzvah, all agree that the difference is small, and that Gassos tefillin are absolutely kosher and very nice for mehadrim min hamehadrim. The vast majority of the Chareidi (religious) world uses Gassos tefillin . I sell 20 pairs of Gassos tefillin for every pair of Dakkos tefillin .
Also, since the very best tefillin batim makers work on tefillin gassos only, the tefillin dakkos of today are not the beautiful high quality that the tefillin gassos are.
If you have a VERY sensitive scalp, and If you are very careful with tefillin, and don't mind replacing batim periodically, you might wish to consider tefillin Dakkos, as some feel they have a "hiddur" of thinner skin putting the parashios closer to the body. However, the vast majority of rabbonim choose tefillin Gassos for themselves.
Tefillin Parashios
I rate my tefillin parashas in the following way. Level 1 are 100% Kosher, but not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye. However they are inside, and are not seen. Many people though prefer "Nicer" tefilin parashas, and are higher quality and more aesthetically pleasing. As the numbers increase, so does the quality of the tefillin parashas.
The "Level" numbers we assign to the tefillin parashas are our subjective independent assessment of the parashas' quality and are related to anything else.

Level 1 = 100% kosher, finest uncoated parchment, written by sofrim yirai shomayim
Level 2 = Same high-quality as above, but more aesthetically pleasing
Level 3 = Same high-quality as above, but more aesthetically pleasing
Level 4 = Same high-quality as above, but more aesthetically pleasing
Level 5 = Same high-quality as above, but more aesthetically pleasing
Level 6 = Same high-quality as above, but more aesthetically pleasing -- Etc.

This is my normal way of selling tefillin:

Basic Peshutos tefillin = I do not sell these as I do not believe they are permissible to use.
Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin = come with Level 1 parashas
Better Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin = come with Level 2 parashas
Tefillin Dakkos = come with Level 3 parashas
Tefillin Gassos = come with Level 4 parashas
Premium Gassos tefillin = come with Level 5 parashas

Premium Gassos tefillin can be ordered with a higher level of parasha than the Level 5 I normally sell them with.

I match up the level of the Tefillin Batim with a minimum level of parasha that should go with them. The more expensive the Tefillin Batim Style you choose, i.e. Basic Peshutim Mehudarim Tefillin, Better Peshutim Mehudarim Tefillin, Tefillin Dakkos, Tefillin Gassos, etc, the better parashas I put in. Please do not ask for better batim with lower level parashas, as I do not wish to ship any tefillin that are less nice inside than they are outside. However, if you desire to upgrade, let's say you buy Premium Gassos that normally come with Level 5, and you want to move up a couple of levels to level 7 or 8, and are willing to spend the extra money, eMail or call me, and I will find out what is available, and at how much extra price point. Believe it or not, the "super premium" and expensive, extra cost parashas are in high demand and low supply, and need to be ordered on a case-by-case basis.

Basic Peshutos Tefillin or Tefillin Peshutim

Peshutos or Peshutim means "simple" simple. These tefillin batim are made from many pieces of parchment which are glued together. They are generally poor quality tefillin , do not last long and are the least halachically preferable. We do not use these tefillin batim - We do not sell these tefillin.

Basic Peshutim Mehudarim $ 237.00 (click here to go to Peshutim Mehudarim Page)

Better Peshutim Mehudarim $ 267.00 (click here to go to Peshutim Mehudarim Page)

The tefillin batim or box that makes up the top part of these tefillin is constructed from one piece of parchment. But, this piece of parchment is cut in a manner so that it is folded into the square box, and glued into place. Some additional pieces of skin/parchment may be glued to the inside to make these stronger. This constructed box is then fitted into a base piece that is made up of thin hide, and glued into place. These are NOT ohr echad (one skin) in the truest sense, since the skin is cut in several strategic places to enable the folding. This means the tefillin has the preferred feature of the top of the batim being made out of one piece of skin, but it is done in a very "easy" way utilizing glue, etc. These batim, though they are far superior to the cheaper "Peshutos" that I do not sell, however, if you can afford better, please choose better ones. Since these tefillin batim are made out of thin skin, they might tend to warp in time if subjected to very tight winding, etc., and can be easily damaged beyond repair by dropping.

The Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin batim that we use are only the finest available.
The "Basic" Peshutim Mehudarim Tefillin contains Level 1 parashas, 100% kosher uncoated parchment; and the "Better" contains level 2, one step nicer parashas. The size of these batim are approximately 3.1cm X 3.1cm. These tefillin are available in the following variations:
Rashi Only
Ashkenaz (winds inward)- Righty (wears tefillin on left arm)
Ashkenaz (winds inward)- Lefty (wears tefillin on right arm)
Sefard (winds outward)- Righty (wears tefillin on left arm)

Ohr Echad Tefillin Dakkos 3.2cm to 4.0cm $ 339.00 up (click here to go to Dakkos Page)

"Ohr Echad" Dakkos Tefillin are a compromise between the Peshutim Mehudarim above, and the "Ohr Echad" Gassos below. They are constructed of multiple pieces of heavier skin, but then covered with a thin "one-piece" layer of thin skin from a goat or sheep. This gives allows them to be called "Ohr Echad" which is preferred. These tefillin are more durable than the Peshutim Mehudarim tefillin . For many years these were the best that was available. However, once the superior, tefillin gassos batim became available last century at realistic, albeit higher, prices, the gassos tefillin became more popular because they are far superior quality wise, and are the most durable tefillin made.
Our Dakkos are the tefillin to use if you prefer lighter weight tefillin batim.
Our Dakkos contain Level 3 parashas, one level better than the Peshutim Mehudarim. These tefillin are available in the following variations:

Gassos (True Ohr Echad) (click here to go to Gassos Page)

3.5cm = $ 595.00
These tefillin are practically indestructible. Gassos are crafted from one piece "Ohr Echad" of heavy leather. This process takes many hours to mold this one piece of heavy skin into the exacting shape of tefillin. Then they are hand crafted over a period of many months, and allowed to dry over a summer and winter. This helps them retain their form. They require a mixture of delicate skill, as well as the strength to apply tons of pressure to achieve the perfect corners and edges with no cutting. These tefillin are very durable, and are usually repairable and can be refinished as new.
Contains level 4 parashas, one level better than the Dakkos. The sizes of these Batim are approximately 3.5cm X 3.5cm. These tefillin are available in the following variations:

3.5cm Rashi Ashkenaz (winds inward)- Righty (wears tefillin on left arm)
3.5cm Rashi Ashkenaz (winds inward)- Lefty (wears tefillin on right arm)

*** Alter Rebbe's Ksav is a ksav, or writing style, that is unique to the first Lubavitcher Rebbe, lovingly called the Alter Rebbe in Chabad. He is the author of the Shulchan Aruch Harav and author of the Tanya. The ksav is similar to Ari Ksav, but with the Alter Rebbe's modifications. Please understand that there is no mesorah or black-and-white sample of the Alter Rebbe's Ksav, and there is a friendly dispute over which version is correct. Only a limited number of sofrim feel they are qualified to write this ksav, however ..... they are NOT all alike. Some rabbonim even at Chabad actually prefer straight Ari Ksav for their Tefillin, since there is a clear, black-and-white, handed down version of that ksav and it is guaranteed 100% kosher to all schools.
If you are not sure, please choose the regular Sefard or Chabad tefillin which come with the Ksav of the Ari Za'l which does have a clear mesora.
So, please order Alter Rebbe's ksav Tefillin only if you are willing to depend and on the sofer's knowledge and would rather have a pair of tefillin written to the best of a sofer's ability to be the Alter Rebbe's Ksav, rather than to play it safe with Ksav Ari Tefillin , and realize that some other sofer, when inspecting them, might hold from an other variation, and not like them. Also, I highly recommend that you only have these Tefillin checked by a Lubavitcher sofer, as many non-Lubavitcher sofrim might have never seen this ksav, and certainly not be knowledgeable enough to inspect these Tefillin. However, all Alter Rebbe's Ksav Tefillin parashas that I sell, are written by Chabad Sofrim, Yiray Shomayim, who truly believe they have it right, and are EXCELLENT and respected sofrim.
I make no promises or guarantees as to the authenticity of Alter Rebbe Ksav!

Description of Tefillin Tefilin Tfillin Tfilin

What are Tefillin? Tefillin are worn by Jews around the world during morning prayer. The Torah commands us to place 4 paragraphs of tefillin text, hand written by an observant scribe on parchment inside these leather Tefillin boxes and strap these tefilin onto our left arm, and on the head every weekday. Tefillin must be 100% kosher. Tefilin that are only 99% kosher are 100% NON Kosher. Tefillin are sometimes called Phylacteries, but you will never find anyone who wears them to call them that. The word Tefillin is pronounced Tfillin.
